Welcome to the French Music Blog

What Is the French Music Blog?

The French Music Blog spotlights the best in modern French music. My goal is to share the great contemporary French music I love with Americans and fellow English-speaking French music fans who might not otherwise hear it. I only feature French music that you can buy in the U.S. (You can also get most of what I feature in the UK, and some of it in Canada.) I started this blog because I thought that if I had an interest in modern French music, then other people might, too.

How’d I get into French music?

My obsession with modern French songs really began when Les Nubians’ song “Makeda” came out in 1998 and was played on American radio — which is extremely rare for a French song. Les Nubians’ all-French album Princesses Nubiennes completely turned soul and R&B music on its head. I was hooked.

Me at the golden Joan of Arc statue at Place des Pyramides in Paris.

After that, I slowly began picking up more French albums. I discovered Tété while browsing at FNAC (a record store chain in France) in 2004. I was in the mood to buy random stuff, and his CDs A la Faveur d’Automne and L’Air de Rien happened to be on the endcap display. Fast forward to present day, and discovering and buying French music has become a full-blown habit for me.

As a lifelong music fan and former music journalist, I think I have a pretty good ear for what’s good and what’s garbage – in any language. And judging from the speed at which my newsletter subscriber list has grown, my readers seem to agree. (Thanks guys!)

Who the Heck Am I?

My name is Celeste and I’m the author of this blog. The most important things to know about me are as follow. I LOVE Paris. I HATE to exercise. Yet, my pedometer says I typically clock over 20,000 steps a day wandering the streets Paris. (Go figure.)

I don’t understand people who enjoy the taste of raw tomatoes, and am equally confounded by those who don’t swoon over chocolate. I live to eat, and I crave variety. When I die, I want my ghost to spend all of eternity haunting either Mario Batali’s Eataly in NYC, or Le Bon Marche’s La Grande Epicerie in Paris.

What Do I Want from You?

If you like what you see and hear on the blog, subscribe to the newsletter, follow me on Twitter (and Retweet any posts you like), like and share posts on Facebook, and buy some French music if you feel so moved.

If something’s on your mind, contact me anytime. (Note: At this time, I don’t accept artists’ requests to review music.)

If you’re a new reader, go to the home page, and pick a category you like. Or just jump in with the latest post. Enjoy discovering French singers and bands!
