Suarez Is the Vampire Weekend of French Pop

Lovely French Pop music from the French band Suarez is today’s feature.

Suarez makes me think of Vampire Weekend, because their inspiration comes from eclectic sources. First of all, this acoustic pop band is an unlikely combination of a Belgian musician, Marc Pinilla, and three folk musicians from Madagascar (brothers Max and Pata Randriamanjava, and their cousin Dada Ravalison.) As if that weren’t unique enough, what they play is a distinctive melange of Malagasy music, British Pop, Cape Verdean folk, and French Chanson. Whew!

I couldn’t decide on just one, or even two videos, so today, you’ll get 3 for the price of 1. Here’s “On Attend,” “Je t’ai toi,” and a modern take on “La Vie en Rose” so reinvigorated that it’s nearly unrecognizable, all taken from Suarez’s debut album, “On Attend.” Admittedly, I chose the more “poppy” songs to feature, but check out songs like “Aie, Aie, Aie” on their album to hear the folk influence.

Everybody Dansez-Vous to French Music

Lately I’ve been in the mood for what I call my “sophisticated” French music. Today’s featured French song, “Dansez-vous” by Pink Martini, makes me want to do just that: Dance!

I love the Latin music flavor blended with the French lyrics on “Dansez-vous,” from Pink Martini’s album, Hang on Little Tomato. Put on your dancing shoes and take a listen below.

Pink Martini is an American band, btw, but they always throw a cool French song or two onto their albums, along with songs in other languages.
