Zaz: Jazz Manouche French Singer

Update: Congratulations to Zaz, winner of Song of the Year for “Je Veux” at Les Victoires de la Musique 2011!!

French music critics are easily excitable, and they get REALLY excited about artists who revive or carry on traditional forms of music. The Female French singer Zaz (Isabelle Geffroy) is one such artist, and you can’t walk into a FNAC these days without tripping over a display for her debut, self-titled album of Jazz Manouche and Chanson Française.

It’s a good thing that her first single, “Je Veux,” is really, really good, or else, all the hype would be for naught, and I would have cast a glance askew at the next French music “revelation” I read about. I’m not a particularly huge Gypsy Jazz fan, but I’ve taken quite a liking to Zaz’s song.

I really like the lyrics too. (Money isn’t what makes her happy. She doesn’t want jewelry from Chanel, a limo, or the Eiffel Tower. She wants love, joy, freedom, etc.) Check it out.
