French Songs about Mothers

Celebrate Mother’s Day (or Mom’s birthday, or any special day for her) with a few French R&B songs about mothers. Check out these tunes, and don’t forget to tell her, “Thanks.”

First up is an R&B group called Voyce au Feminin, made up of six young singers who came together from the worlds of Gospel, R&B, Pop and Soul to make positive, uplifting music.

Jessica sings lead on the Zouk single, “Mamie” (‘Grandma’ or ‘Granny’), with some help from fellow Voyce au Feminin members Florence François and Sara Battery. It’s a beautiful and loving tribute.

The group also did a French remake of “U Will Know,” the Black Men United track from the Jason’s Lyric soundtrack. (It’s called “Sois des Nôtres,” if you want to find it online.)

French R&B singer Sheryfa Luna was the Season 4 winner of the French reality show Popstars (she beat out fellow diva Lea Castel), and she’s racked up quite a few French hits from her three albums so far. From her album, Si Tu Me Vois, here’s “Yemma,” which means “mother” in Arabic. (Note: The lyrics are in French.)

Here’s another tribute to mothers from a French R&B singer with spine-tingling pipes, Kayna Samet. This one’s also called, “Yema.”

For those who are looking for a “Dear Mama” 2-Pac-type song, there’s the classic “Mama Lova” by the French rapper Oxmo Puccino and Kheops.

The rapper La Fouine has a song called “La fête des mères” (Mother’s Day) but that’s a different kind of song all together. It’s a shot fired in his ongoing feud with fellow French rapper Booba. For something more in the vein of a parental tribute, check out his hit, “Papa,” which of course is about his father. Along the same lines, Pop singer Christophe Maé has a song called “Ça Fait Mal” that’s known colloquially as “Papa.”
