Tri-lingual Folk Soul from Stevy Mahy

Stevy MahyFloat away on the enchanting French / English / Creole folk music of Stevy Mahy. Her lyrics flow seamlessly between the three languages, over rich acoustic melodies that envelop and warm the soul.

Mahy’s childhood was spent between her birthplace of Paris, which shaped her early musical tastes, and Guadeloupe, in the French West Indies.

As an adult, she eventually settled in the New York as a documentary filmmaker. She returned to Guadeloupe, which considers her home, to record her debut album, The Beautiful Side of a Kreyol Folk Trip. It sounds like an album title India.Arie would come up with, and I think both artists share a similar acoustic vibe and a focus on positive, uplifting lyrics.

Mahy’s biggest musical influences are Iron & Wine and Me’Shell Ndegeocello, and she echoes their trademark hushed tones and intimate style on her record, adding just the faintest hint of Caribbean rhythm.

She posted the Creole-English song and video “Beautiful” online while working on the rest of the album, and it took off so quickly with fans that it prompted her to release it as a separate digital single before the album was ready. Enjoy the video for the lovely tri-ilingual song, “Something About You,” and the aforementioned “Beautiful.”

Yay! Stevy herself likes what I wrote about her, and I couldn’t be more thrilled:

In 2012, she released an ode to Haiti called “Haiti Chérie” (her own song, not a remake of the well-known patriotic anthem) inspired by her visit to the country post-earthquake. The song was recorded in part in Port-au-Prince, and features Haitian singer James Germain.

Mahy is also a budding jewelry designer. She has a colorful jewelry line called “Moun,” which incorporates paperboard, fabric, and other repurposed materials.

The singer is crowdfunding to produce her sophomore album. She quickly met and then surpassed her fundraising goal in just a few weeks, thanks to a dedicated fan base hungry for more of her music. How sweet is it that she’s giving out vouchers for hugs as part of the package of gifts to donors at certain levels?

The new album is titled Renaissance Woman and is due out in April 2014. You can follow her progress and hear snippets of her new music here.
