Alex Beaupain is an award-winning singer-songwriter and composer. He first came to my attention when I saw the film Dans Paris, the second of his six films he’s scored for celebrated filmmaker Christopher Honoré.
(Think Blake Edwards and Henry Mancini — it’s a filmmaker/composer partnership that spans their careers.) The music was so beautiful that I watched the credits to see who created the music. Once I knew who was behind the music, I was hooked.
Raised on traditional Chanson Française, and influenced by Alt the major male French Pop and Rock singers of the late 70’s and 80’s as well as English rockers The Smiths, Alex Beaupain is known for his literary Pop, mainly, love song lyrics filled with metaphors and wordplay.
It was Beaupain and Honoré’s third film together, Les Chansons d’Amour, that cemented both their places in history — Honoré as a gutsy new cinematic voice in the tradition of French New Wave, and Beaupain as a shining new voice in Chanson française.
Beaupain wrote all the songs for the musical film Les Chansons d’Amour , which earned him a César Award (equivalent of an Oscar) for Best Original Score. The film festival hit became the film of a generation.
His other soundtracks include Dix-sept fois Cécile Cassard, La Belle Personne and Les Bien-Aimés (Beloved), which was the closing film of the 2011 Cannes Film Festival and earned him another César Award nomination.
His non-soundtrack albums are Garçon d’honneur, 33 Tours, Pourquoi battait mon coeur, which was nominated for the Prix Constantin 2011, and his latest album, Après Moi le Deluge.
From Pourquoi battait mon coeur, here’s the duet “Avant la Haine” featuring Camelia Jordana:
