This ‘Little’ Singer Is Big on Charm

The French singer Little (Aurelie Nguyen) is one of my favorite music discoveries. She’s so cute — I just want to put her in my pocket. Her stage name is an obvious comment on her diminutive stature. (She’s all of 5’2″.)

Little began playing the guitar at 16, inspired by young female singer/songwriters like Michelle Branch and Avril Lavigne. She toes the line between Acoustic Pop and Indie / Electropop. I personally think her childlike voice shines brighter on the charming acoustic songs, but I like her danceable stuff, too.

Her music career was born when one of her songs became popular on MySpace. Though she sings in French, she definitely would not be classified as ‘chanson francaise.’ Her fresh, modern sound is closer to Oh Land than it is to Carla Bruni.

Little released her first EP in 2007, followed by her self-titled debut album in 2008. Most of the songs on her debut album are a bit, twee, but I like that in an indie singer. From the funky, “Je Veux Des Violons” to the sparse soundscapes of “Zzz,” every song is a treat.

Here’s her fist single, “Je veux des Violons” (I want violins). What she really means is she wants a little romance in her life. I know that lots of you lady readers out there can relate.

Here she is, cute as a button, doing an acoustic performance of her song, “N’importe Quoi.”

And here’s an acoustic performance of song that doesn’t appear on her album, “La Belle et le Connard.”

Little contacted me on Facebook to share another video. It’s a cool Electropop diddy called “Mes Cheveux” (“my hair”), with an colorful video to boot. Check it out:

I haven’t heard any news on a second album, but if you want to see what she’s up to, you can follow her on Facebook.
